Super Coach Class of 2024 Spotlight: Michigan
This week was are highlighting 3 incredible coaches joining an ever growing roster of Super Coaches representing the state of Michigan.
PlayVS is thrilled to welcome three talented Michigan educators to the Super Coach program for the 2024-2025 school year. Jerrod Braman, Cameron Montney, and Christopher White each bring unique expertise, backgrounds, and perspectives to the esports community. Here’s an introduction to their journeys, insights, and dedication to expanding esports opportunities in Michigan schools.
Jerrod Braman
Role: Coach of the Dansville High School Esports Program
School: Dansville High School, Home of the Aggies
With a decade of experience teaching math, computer science, and engineering at Dansville High School, Jerrod Braman is a passionate advocate for esports in education. Originally from Crystal, Michigan, he graduated from Central Montcalm High School and has since dedicated himself to creating inclusive opportunities for students in smaller schools. “I want to see kids who are looking for a place to belong have the opportunity to find that place in esports,” Jerrod shares. His excitement for the Super Coach program stems from a desire to broaden the esports landscape, making it accessible and engaging for students who may not have previously felt connected to school activities.
Jerrod’s favorite part of esports is watching his students take pride in their accomplishments and grow in confidence. “My heart is full when I see them stepping outside their comfort zones, mentoring younger students, or learning to collaborate,” he says. Outside of school, Jerrod enjoys spending time with family and golfing, a fun balance to his active role in esports.
Cameron Montney
Role: High School Esports Coach & K-12 Network Administrator
School: Hartland High School, Home of the Eagles
Only two years into K-12 education, Cameron Montney has already made a significant impact. Serving as both the Network Administrator for Hartland Consolidated Schools and one of Hartland High School’s esports coaches, Cameron has seen firsthand the positive effect that esports can have on students and school spirit. Raised in Flint, Michigan, he joined the Super Coach program to help other schools establish esports programs without feeling overwhelmed.
Cameron’s favorite part of esports is the energy and excitement from the players. “From clutch OT goals in Rocket League to students’ first victories in Smash, the celebrations are amazing,” he says. Hearing students express how happy they are to be part of a team is especially meaningful to him. Beyond the classroom, Cameron is an avid comic book collector with over 5,000 issues in his collection, proudly showcasing his love for Spider-Man and other iconic characters.
Christopher White
Role: Social Studies Teacher & Esports Coach
School: Novi High School, Home of the Wildcats
Christopher White began his teaching career at Novi High School in 2016, where he teaches AP European History and a unique elective he designed called Detroit History. He also leads Novi’s esports team, which has been active since 2020. Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Christopher earned his BA in History from the University of Michigan and an MA in Curriculum and Instruction from Eastern Michigan University.
Christopher brings extensive esports experience, having competed in leagues for Smash Bros, Starcraft 2, and DOTA 2. “I love helping newer coaches navigate the complexities of high school esports,” he shares. Now, as a Super Coach, he’s excited to share his insights with other coaches, helping students find their passions through competitive gaming. Beyond coaching, Christopher is an avid gamer, currently ranked Divine 3 in DOTA 2, and a longtime fan and player of Magic: The Gathering.
